Fond of the water, it is no surprise Kim tends to travel along the eastern coast of South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia. “I like the water – I like to paddle board. I have a dog, named ‘river’ actually!” she said.
When she’s not on a beach or riverbank, Kim loves to cook and admits she’s addicted to the Food Network. When we caught up with her, she was cooking slow roasted pork tacos with fire roasted tomatoes and pickled onions. “It’s a crockpot meal, so there’s not a lot of work involved. A little bit of vinegar, sugar, salt and pepper, a touch of oregano – a few hours later, and it’s all ready,” she said. Sounds delicious!
Kim says she doesn’t get to cook as often when she’s staying in a hotel on assignment, but always brings her TV and X-Box for some fun entertainment. “To me, traveling – it’s kind of like my weekend. I like to play Call of Duty! I use the hotel’s wifi and bring my own TV with me. I never get to play at home because I’m too busy. It’s a lot of fun,” she said.
On more than one occasion, Kim has faced some extreme whether when traveling to or from assignments. A hurricane in North Carolina was an unexpected surprise once, and during a winter assignment in Virginia, it snowed during her every commute from her North Carolina home. “Everytime I went up there it snowed or iced – so everyone kind of set their weather calendar when I was working!” she said.
Kim’s future plans include traveling to New England and even Alaska! “I like to be outdoors, but I’m not the one to just lay around in the sun. I like whitewater rafting and camping,” she said. Career-wise, she is interested in going back to school to become a nurse practitioner. With about ten years of travel nursing under her belt, Kim says Cardiac units are her preference. “I like cardiac the best: hearts are simple, and I like the patients. It’s a very stressful time for them and their families, and I’ve been a nurse for 15 years, so I know how to make them feel more comfortable. I’m really confident with that,” she said.
Jill Kenney is Kim’s recruiter. “Jill is very friendly and professional. She calls in just to check up with me, and keeps an eye open for new opportunities in advance. She listens to me,” she said. In addition to Jill’s committed, day-to-day support, Kim says the people-first atmosphere at Cirrus is very important. “I feel like I’m not lost in a big company. I still get a lot of individualized and almost immediate attention, unlike what you receive at bigger companies. Here there’s a little more flexibility, and I don’t ever hear ‘this is our policy – this is how we handle everyone’ and that’s nice,” she said.
Thanks Kim for traveling with us. We’re prod to serve you and look forward to taking you Alaska one day!
